Protect data against cyber attacks – federal government renews security strategy

4.1.2017

The Federal Government has also put the issue of cyber attacks on its agenda 2017. Cyber-attack cases would have to be prevented, uncovered and solved, said Federal Minister of the Interior de Maizière. It wants to contribute more to cyber security with its own Cabinet decision. It responds to the increased cyber threat. Data rooms are a way to exchange sensitive data. These particularly protected cloud servers are used primarily in the M & A and real estate sectors to secure due diligence processes and protect them against competitors and cybercriminals.

More security for data

The security strategy is reintroduced with the cabinet decision. „In the face of technical and international development, it was necessary to present a new strategy,“ said Thomas de Maizière, Minister of the Interior, at the presentation of the strategy. It forms the framework for all activities of the Federal Government, which are connected with cyber security. The aim of the Federal Government is to create and maintain the balance between freedom and security in the digital world.

Numerous measures

The strategy includes over 30 individual measures. In the coming years, the focus of the cyber security policy will be on the following four fields of action:

  • Safe and self-determined action in a digitized environment is strengthened.
  • The cooperation between the state and the economy in cyber security is to be expanded.
  • A powerful and sustainable national cyber security architecture is being built.
  • Germany is actively positioned in the European and international cyber security policy.

„This will provide both preventive protection against attack and protection during or after an attack,“ said the Minister of the Interior.

New threats

The objectives of cyber attacks have changed. „There are new threats to freedom of expression, and we are witnessing disinformation campaigns that can also be used to prevent attacks, information, government, parliament, or media houses, which we want to prevent, uncover and enlighten,“ said de Maizière. The strategy enables Germany to make the most of the enormous opportunities and potential of digitization in the wider social interest. This is a prerequisite for the safety risks to be controlled.
